Policy for Protest
(Team & Individual Events)

Special Olympics Northern California

Policy for Protest
(Team & Individual Events)

Revised

9-5-2024

The following policy will apply to Special Olympics Northern California (SONorCal) individual and team sports:

  1. Protests to the Games Rules Committee may only be made concerning competition of athletes or partners within a venue, where within that competition; rulings are either made or not made in regard to the fairness and equity of the competition. Procedural or technical issues may be protested. Judgement calls made by officials or final division placement may not be protested.
  2. Protests must be submitted on the “Team & Individual Sport Protest Form” by a registered, certified Coach to the appropriate person (see form), immediately, so that event officials may be made aware of the appeal. Protests should be made prior to the presentation of awards. On the “Team & Individual Sports Protest Form,” the coach must cite the rule from the National Governing Body or SONorCal rules for the sport, which supports their protest.
  3. If the awards presentation has taken place, the registered, certified Coach has 30 minutes after the awards presentation to file a protest. A corrected awards presentation will be made to the athlete/team in question, if needed. Corrected awards presentations to other athletes/teams in the same division will not be made, but official results will reflect proper placement.
  4. All protests will be brought to the attention of the Games Rules Committee. The decision of this committee will be final and binding.
