Our Coaches Education System (CES) Plan will help you earn opportunities to lead teams on the regional, national and even international level.

Coaching Special Olympics Athletes Course

We mostly play by the rules – but some adaptions are made to accommodate the various ability levels of our athletes. By taking the Coaching Special Olympics Athletes (CSOA) Course, you will gain a basic understanding of the scope of responsibilities and expectations required to be a Special Olympics Coach. CSOA also satisfies part of the Coaches Education System requirements.

“Coach the Coaches” Course

We are looking for experienced coaches to help lead training sessions for other volunteer coaches in your area. These coaches (clinicians) instruct newer volunteers on how to properly manage a practice site and teach the fundamentals of a sport in preparation to compete.

Host a Coaching Clinic

CPR and First Aid Certification

Current volunteers (coaches, area directors, team managers, Unified Partners & GMT) may take a free* CPR and First Aid certification course. Volunteers must have a current Volunteer Application on file and complete this form to request the registration link and unique code**.

Volunteers with an existing CPR and/or First Aid certification can submit their record for acknowledgement to .

*Cost covered by Special Olympics NorCal
**Subject to review of Volunteer Application status

Sports Certifications

Certified coaches have the chance to lead their teams at regional and championship events — and even at USA Games and World Games.

Sports certifications expire after three years. Check the list of certified coaches and re-certify as needed.

Initial Certification

For first-time certifications (or for expired certifications). Once completed, submit a Coaches Education System Application within 60 days to complete the process and become certified.

Re-Certification

For renewing a current or recently-expired (within one year) certification. You must achieve a passing grade and no application is required. For sports without a re-certification link listed, you may re-certify by completing the initial certification.
